Surgery
Surgery for prostate cancer is usually recommended only after thorough evaluation and discussion of all treatment options. A man considering surgery should be aware of the benefits and risks of the procedure.
Removal of the prostate gland, in a procedure called a radical prostatectomy, is often recommended for treatment of early stage prostate cancers. This is a major surgery, usually done using general anesthesia. An incision is made through the abdomen or perineal area, and the prostate and seminal vesicles are removed.
The procedure usually requires a hospital stay of 2 – 3 days. Your provider will refer you to a qualified urologist to perform the procedure.
